The controllers that come with the Bally Arcade and the Astrocade are not called joysticks, even though that is the name to which they are often referred. The controllers, by both Astrocade and Bally, are called "hand controls," or, less frequently, "control handles." The "button" on the "hand control" is called the "trigger," and the paddle-like device on the "hand control" is called the "knob."

Close-up of knob. The Bally / Astrocade console could have up to four controllers plugged in at the same time. Each controller was numbered on the top of the knob to help help the player identify which controller was plugged into which port. The number was only cosmetic; it did not matter which port a hand controller was plugged into.
